PDP gains N646 million from 17 presidential candidates, ends forms sale

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s major opposition party, completed the sale and submission of nomination and expression of interest forms for all elective posts ahead of the 2023 general elections yesterday. At the last count, 17 presidential candidates had purchased nomination forms to run for the party’s presidential ticket. The party is believed to have reaped N646 million from the selling of forms by closing the gate to form sales. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim are among the candidates. Senator Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State; Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State; Udom Emmanuel, the governor of Akwa Ibom State; Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State; Ayodele Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State; Nwachukwu Anakwenze, a United States based medical practitioner; and Dele Momodu, the media mogul, Mohammed HayatuDeen,a former banker and economist; Sam Ohuabunwa, a pharmacist; Cosmos Ndukwe, former Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly; Charles Ugwu, Rt Hon Chikwendu Kalu; and Oliver Tareila Diana, the sole female contestant in the race are all other aspirants from the party. According to party protocol, the single female aspirant only paid N6 million for the expression of interest form. The race has now been set for the party’s primaries, which will take place on May 28-29. Udom Emmanuel, one of the hopefuls and the governor of Akwa Ibom State, met with the NWC and asked them to push for his emergence as the party’s flag bearer so that he could repeat his exceptional success in Akwa Ibom. Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s chairman, responded by saying that the PDP has the best candidates, not those that run around stadiums but can’t run a railway station. Our aspirants are capable individuals. As the National Working Committee, our goal is to establish a level playground for you to come and play your game, headded.  I want to reassure you that we are dedicated to holding the most transparent and fair primary elections in the PDP’s history. However, the PDP New Generation has cautioned the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to avoid godfatherism and candidate imposition ahead of the party primaries.
