2023: Wike Sues Atiku, Tambuwal, INEC Over Presidential Primary

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has sued the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal over the party’s presidential primary held in May.

Mr Wike is asking the court to determine whether Tambuwal having stepped down for Atiku “during the primaries ought to lose his votes.”

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/782/2022, Wike and a PDP chieftain, Newgent Ekamon, are listed as the plaintiffs, Punch Newspaper reported.

The PDP is listed as the first respondent while the Independent National Electoral Commission is the 2nd respondent. Tambuwal and Atiku are listed as the 3rd and 4th respondents respectively.

The suit comes as the PDP struggles to unite Atiku and Wike, two if its most influential members.

Atiku had won the presidential primaries with 371 votes with Wike trailing after polling 237 votes.

A discontented Wike was then passed over for the vice-presidency candidate slot, further deepening the division between both men.

Wike has accused Atiku of lying against him, although he vowed to remain in the PDP.

Meanwhile, Atiku has promised to unite the party ahead of the presidential poll next year.
