JUST IN: Iga Świątek Wins 2022 French Open

Date:

Iga Świątek has won the 2022 French Open and equalled Venus Williams’ record for the longest women’s winning streak of this millennium.

The world number one continued her blistering form at Roland-Garros, where she beat 18-year-old Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

Świątek dropped just one set throughout the entire tournament as she stormed to her sixth successive career title and second Grand Slam triumph on the French clay.

The 21-year-old needed just one hour and eight minutes to dominate once again, and she looked completely in control from the off.

Gauff looked to spark a comeback in the second set by going 2-0 up, but a series of errors — including three double faults — seemed to break her creative flow.

The American’s French Open run has been a remarkable one. She did not drop a single set prior to her meeting with Świątek and she reached a tournament final for the first time in her career.

After her semi-final win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan, Gauff admitted she would be happy no matter the result this weekend.
