Many feared dead, as Yorubas, Akwa Ibom indigenes clash (video)

Following a battle between Ilaje people (Yoruba inhabitants) and indigenes of Mkpanak in Ibeno, the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, April 20, scores of people are believed to have been murdered, many others injured, and houses worth millions of naira destroyed.

The battle was said to be the consequence of a cult war that began with the stabbing death of a local resident before taking on ethnic overtones.
According to accounts, ilaje residents, largely fishermen, have begun fleeing the community via forest routes while their homes and tents are robbed and destroyed by hoodlums.

An eyewitness who wishes to remain unknown, who confirmed the occurrence, described the scenario as terrible and urged the state government to form a committee to probe the matter.

It is regrettable that this situation has resulted in the deaths of innocent people and the devastation of property he said.

Over the decades, the Ibeno community has been a wonderful host to both indigenes and non-indigenes who have been living in concord without rancor, the eyewitness added.

As a result, I’m utilizing this platform to call for peace and an end to hostilities between both warring parties.
