What are social networks?
Social media is a website or platform that enables users to connect with others locally or nationally by sharing information about themselves and other things like similar interests, ideas, and personal items. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, MiChat, and tiktok are a few examples of social media platforms. By using these platforms, people can connect with people around the world and learn about their cultures and traditions, among other things. This makes it simple to communicate in a matter of seconds or minutes.
The media’s effects on both children and adults
Both adults and children can have negative impacts from social media, some of which include:
a. dependency and distraction;
b. depression;
c. cyberbullying;
d. insufficient privacy; and
e. loss of life and property.
a. ADDICTION/DISTRACTION
Many people now use social media as a form of distraction, and some become addicted to it to the point where they lose focus on other activities and focus exclusively on social media all day and night. On the other hand, others are so dependent on their phones that they can’t go a minute without them and carry them with them wherever they go, including to the bathroom.
b. DEATH AND PROPERTY LOSS
Because of social media, many individuals have lost their lives. They are constantly glued to their phones, even when they are walking down the street, which causes them to be more vulnerable to automobile accidents and scams that cause them to lose their property.
c. DEPRESSION
One of the harmful impacts of social media on both adults and kids is that, as a result of addiction, many people become depressed when holding their phones near to their bodies or when a person they met online isn’t online at a particular time. People who meet online and develop close relationships often battle with loneliness, and when those relationships don’t work out, sadness takes control.
d. PRIVACY VIOLATION
Any social media network that you use demands certain personal information about you before you can use it, including your name and last name, date of birth (DOB), age, and a biography. Many people give up personal information about themselves to others, which causes issues in the future, giving them access to you and learning things about you that can be used against you at any time. In most cases, having access precludes you from having privacy.
e. WEBSITE FOR ADULTS ONLY
Pornography is the most dangerous website for both adults and children. People get addicted to it and lose focus in class and at home while watching porn, to the point where some even practice masturbating or raping. This has affected many, even in their marital homes. Adult websites have destroyed many dreams.
f. Cyberbullying
The use of electronic media to harass and bully others is known as cyberbullying. Online bullying is becoming more common; when someone is harassed by others, they gain access to their account and threaten a large number of people.
