WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons bulldoze Botswana 2-0


The Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated debutants, Mares of Botswana 2-0 in their second group C game at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The defending champions redeemed their chances of a 10th continental honour through goals from Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe after falling to a 2-1 defeat in the hands of the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the first group game on Monday.

Onumonu gave the Falcons who were without star forward, Asisat Oshoala who picked an injury in the first match at the Prince Moulay Al-Hassan Stadium, the lead in the 21st minute.

Ucheibe extended the Nigerians’ lead with a brilliant finish immediately after the break. The West Africans continued to dominate the game but were unable to score more goals.

The Botswana ladies struggled through out the game which saw the Super Falcons picked their first three points of the tournament.

Earlier, South Africa defeated Burundi 3-1 in the other group C game. With today’s results, Banyana Banyana leads the group with six points followed by Nigeria and Botswana with three points each, and Burundi at the bottom with zero point.

Nigeria will face Burundi in their next group game on Sunday.
